In the eighteenth century, hunt staff did not invariably wear red coats; contemporaneous paintings show professional staff wearing the beige, brown, or buff long coats that were their daily attire. The tan tops of their boots folded up over their knees in bad or wet conditions. Hunt horses often had docked tails, and sometimes docked ears. With its muted sepia and golden colors, the landscape in this work is reminiscent of Stubbs's The Fifth Earl of Carlisle's Groom William Shutt riding his Master's favourite Chestnut (1773), which is in the collection of Castle Howard. The original is available, or the image can be acquired as a fine giclee print.
The Canadian is an old breed, a progenitor of the Morgan and American Saddlebred; Canadian horses were brought to Virginia in the early 17th century. This is a portrait of a horse who, as a sire, made an important contribution to the breed. His owner wanted her superb animal portrayed in a manner that would reference the breed's historic roots. Horse and groom are posed in the owner's beloved Rappahannock County.
